Well, I was trying to post for another topic... and I tried three times. And my computer crashed, browser crashed, and then the power went out... I figure that topic simply wasn't meant to be. ^_^

Soooo.. we'll try a new one.

But what to use for a new topic? Maybe 'what would the Xenogears world be like if Krelian did something intelligent, like jump off of Solaris'? ^_^ Heck, I just love to hate him, but unfortunately I always end up in an argument when that happens...

No, I think that Myaru dear would have problems with that topic. ^_~

(Warning - There are now spoilers from here on)

Although that does bring one thought to the fore... the question if a character can be considered 'evil' or not. Where is the point where you can excuse a character's actions due to circumstances, and where do they become responsable for the evil they commit?

An excellent example is Kuja from FF9. Without giving too many spoilers, its pretty easy to say that Kuja gets the very short end of the stick in his life... but does that excuse his ascension to Trance Kuja, or his attempts to capture powerful Edolians in order to battle his master?

Or Melfice from Grandia 2, who is possessed by the Horns of Valmar and became evil as a result of that. Of course, he then kills a good number of people, corrupts the land around him, and generally is not a nice person... but can this truely be considered his fault?

Or as a last example, when the final nature of the opponent is evil, can you truely hate them? Enemies like the incrediably contrived Necron, or as a better example, Nytharlotep from Persona - Innocent Sin and Persona - Eternal Punishment? Both of these enemies are evil incarnate, but they are honest about their natures and goals... have you ever been able to hate one of these types of villians as much as a more 'human' one?

Evil... something that I don't think can truly be interpreted by anyone. I suppose it depends on your personal viewpoints and how hard you think about it. Sure, Stein murdered Billy's parents and tried to kill him too, but he was so driven over the edge by Jessiah, is it right to call him evil? He certainly was provoked into doing his deeds. Can Krelian be truly called an evil person when he attempted to create a world with no suffering, but only killed millions to do it? (although keep in mind all the humans in Xenogears were born for one purpose, to revive Deus and thats what happened to them :P) I can't really think of anything that is truly 'evil'. I guess you could assign that to Satan, but I don't believe in Satan anyway... -_-

Hmmmm..... A most intresting question.

I do belive that you become evil the minute you take actions that you are aware are evil. All the characters you named (with the possible exception of Grandia 2 which I have not played) are evil because they where aware, or at least capable of understanding the pain that they caused. Had they been mentally handicaped and done such activities I would be in doubt, but not one of those villians was handicaped they mad their choices fully aware of the consequences.

No amount of pain that one being has suffered gives him the right to inflict pain on others. Now to act to prevent such pain from occuring again that is understandable, but even such an action should be in a methode that causes the least possible collatorial damage. Nor should such actions take away all decision from other thinking beings. (e.g. destroying the world thus stopping all pain)

Now the second question I cannot answer. I never hated any of the villians in any game that I can think of.

Why do we love to hate characters like Grahf and Krelian?

I am not sure if it is because they are "evil" in the classic sense. I think, rather, it is because they represent what could happen to us should we be driven to the brink. One event changed the lives of two men forever, and made them who they are when you encounter them in Xenogears.

Such crux events in and of themselves do not make a person "good" or "evil." It is the aftermath that defines a survivor. What each individual takes from the event, as a motivation or simple memory, becomes a defining characteristic. In the cases of Krelian and Grahf, their motivations were born in pain and made selfishly. They are not "evil" like Kefka (I don't love to hate him, I just hate the little...), simply driven, hurting, and spiteful.

And those can be powerful weapons indeed.

Who has a right to determine what's evil?

A man has his village burned down. He seeks revenge and murders the king of the kingdom which burned his home. The people of the kingdom didn't see any wrong in the burning of a village making trouble and thus think the man is 'evil' for killing their noble, honest, and good natured king, while the now homeless villagers look at him as a hero.
