SECTION ONE: CALL OF DESTINY

CHAPTER
I

The cold Northern air blew inside the command tent. Inside stood five men. They where crowding around a large map lain across the table. The map’s desperate attempts to curl where held at bay by one of the men who leaned over it gazing upon it in deep thought. The map itself detailed a small area above the Northern Mountains of Atia, or above The Sky Fingers. On the main body of the map were placed a few small figures marking the positions of friendly and opposing troops.

The man stood still in the silent room a minute longer. Then he turned looking up at one of the others. “Pryman, do you think that Cryhia’s forces could get here,” he spoke thrusting a finger to a small round dot on the paper, “Before he can reorganize his forces?”

The man called Pryman leaned over the table and took a long look at the map. “Maybe, but if any large segments of his forces are in the area she won’t be here on time”

The man leaned back from the map lost in thought. “Hmmm, It might be worth the risk.” he spoke with a sigh.

Another man further in the background nodded solemnly in agreement. He frowned and looked at the man before the table. “Are you sure you want to risk battling him and most of his forces at the same time?”

The man looked up from his intense concentration on the map. “I understand what you are trying to say Tyan, but if we don’t move now to neutralize his forces he will simple manufacture more. We simply have no choice we have but to move now and defeat him, or we will be the ones facing defeat.”

The man looked back toward the rest of the group. “It is based on this I suggest that we wait for Cryhia’s forces.” He waited a moment giving his advisors a chance to speak. The man glanced over to a young soldier. “Yangman, I want you to inform Cryhia I want her forces here,” he said gesturing to the previously indicated spot, “In three days and no more even if she has to march her troops in to the ground. After this I want you to gather all, and I do mean all, of the Fifty. I will need every last bit of strength I can get for this battle. Pryman I want you to take a small elite force and keep him pinned at Trystia. I do not want him moving until we have the concentration of forces to attack. Oh yes, Yangman stop at Yamath and tell Firhar that I want him to pull the garrison and join my forces. In fact tell him that I want him to empty every keep between us on his way.”

Yangman stood stunned. He looked at his commander in complete shock. “But... but that would leave us completely vulnerable to attack. They could take the capital and we could not stop them!”

The man chuckled. “If we lose this battle then I and every last member of the Fifty will be dead and with all of us are dead the capital will fall within days.”

“But if they attack the capital then thousands of women and children will be killed!”

The man snorted. “More will be born. It takes a lot more than one army to exterminate human kind. We have survived worse than this.” The man seemed to stare into space for a time. “I personally don’t like leaving them defenseless especially when I know that the attack you described is almost guaranteed to occur, but truth be told more people will die if we don’t have the necessary forces to win. Montanagon will not stop at conquering the world. He has allied himself with -them-. He will exterminate all life and then use the knowledge of the tomes to repeat the feat on any reaming worlds. If we should lose I don’t know if anyone will be capable of stopping him. In short the lives every man and woman on this world is an acceptable loss, if that is what it takes to win.” The man stood for a moment longer. Then gesturing with dismissal he said, “Go Yangman you have much to do.”

Yangman stood for a moment as if trying to decide whether to speak or obey. In the end his mind registered the command and with that he left. The man undistracted by Yangman pause turned and looked at Pryman and smiled. “It is easy to forget that the young ones don’t keep things quite in perspective.”

Pryman chuckled, “Remember when I was like that. War is hard, that is a lesson that the younger members need. Sometimes sacrifices are needed to win. The young ones tend to forget that sometimes a small price paid now can sometimes save many more latter. However we must forgive them. After all even when I joined you still held that very perspective.”

“Yes, you are right. It is easy to forget that I have had nearly ten times as many years to learn my lessons. Well back to the war. Any objections to my plan?”

Pryman looked at the man thinking for a moment and said, “I hate to say it but I agree with you completely.”

The man looked around and when no one spoke said, “Then that settles it. You are dismissed.”

The other men as one left the tent and the man sighed and sat in a chair next to a second table. He picked up an old book, but did not open it. He just stared at the cover for a while. Then he set it back down and mumbled, “Maybe latter.” Then he turned slowly and looked up as if he where looking at someone. He smiled and said “Watching me are you Tamon? Now is not the time for such things, WAKE UP!”

*******

With a shock Tamon shot up. His heart beat fast and his breath came in and out with desperation. Just a dream... Just a dream it is only a dream he thought to himself as he rubbed his eyes and stood up from his shabby bed. Light poured into the room in thin beams through the shutters over the window. The sound of movement could be heard on the lower floor.

Well I am awake might as well get up. Tamon stood pulling on clothing that lay scattered on the floor. Slowly he trudged out of the room and down the rickety old stairs. His mother, Mina, looked up at him as he walked down the stairs.

“My, my, you are up early. Luckily for you Yazon has just left with the well bucket.”

As she spoke a loud voices could be heard approaching the back door. The door swung open light pouring into the room. A large man stood in the doorway appearing like a shadow from the contrast of the light. In his right hand was a large bucket swaying back in forth. Tamon could hear the water softly sloshing in a slightly off set rythme from the bucket. Beside the large man’s side stood another smaller man who though tall appeared short next to the giant who was casually holding the bucket. The smaller man could be clearly heard saying, “I don’t care what say about his talent. He is my son and he will take care of the farm when I pass away, not go off and play soldier!”

The large man just grunted ignoring the other man’s useless arguments. He turned toward Tamon and a sour look crossed his face while he strode into the room followed by the smaller man who was Tamon’s father, Harmon, who had not yet halted his loud and useless argument.

The large man grunted again looking at Tamon his loud battlefield voice filled the room quenching every word of Harmon’s. “I see you're up. Perhaps you might become a soldier yet you seem to have gained some inner sense of danger.”

“Good morning to you too Yazon,” Tamon said cheerfully ignoring Yazon’s insult. “Thanks for bringing the water for me.”

With one smooth move Yazon stepped forward with his large legs and dumped the bucket of water on Tamon. Then with an offhanded swing he tossed the bucket onto the table where it landed right side up the remaining water sloshing loudly inside the bucket. Looking down at the now soaked Tamon he spoke, “Any time.” With that he turned and stepped toward the front door. Once there he stopped and looked over his shoulder at once again Tamon. “After your breakfast I want to see you at the barracks, soldier. Oh yes, do finish washing up. I don’t want you stinking up my barracks.” With that he opened the door and stepped out leaving Tamon dripping water on the wood floor.

Tamon looked down at himself considering what happened for a moment. Then he looked up at his mothers face wore a stern expression with a sigh he said, “Okay, okay I will clean it up.” As he walked to get some rags to dry up the water on the floor he peaked into the bucket. Sure enough, there was water left in the bucket. At least he left enough water for breakfast Tamon thought now more cheerful then before.

After finishing Tamon walked outside and tossed his soaked shirt over the railing and pulled on a second shirt he had grabbed before heading outside. Then he walked back inside and settled in a chair to eat breakfast. His father looked at him and said, “I don’t care what Yazon says you ain’t goina be a soldier boy. Your great grandfather was a farmer, your grandfather was a farmer, I am a farmer and by the fates that is what you will too.” After this Harmon paused for a moment and then said, “When you get back the south field needs to be plowed in preparation for the planting.”

Tamon just grunted in all probability now that the weather had warmed up Yazon would take him out into the Kyrha forest that surrounded Terrillia for some 'Wilderness exposure'. This of course meant that Tamon would head out into the forest then some time latter Yazon would start tracking him down. Tamon was supposed to either make it to a specific point without being 'killed' or to eliminate Yazon. Tamon had done this some dozen times already and every time the end result had been the same. Yazon had taken Tamon by complete surprise long before Tamon had even gotten close to the designated point. The few times Tamon had attempted to attack Yazon had ended with the same result. He would have suspected that Yazon cheated, but he had seen the few times Yazon made his own soldiers do the same thing and had watched as Yazon gave them not the designated half an hour head start, but a gigantic hour and a half head start. After seeing that Tamon did not have the guts to ask how much time Yazon waited before heading after him.

Not to say that Tamon suspected that he wasn’t good. He knew from the talks between Harmon and Yazon that Yazon believed he was talented and Tamon had repeatedly beaten most of the other soldiers one on one. However after seeing Yazon in action Tamon wasn’t prepared to say exactly what a true soldier was capable of. Then again if what some of the older folk said was true Yazon was a living legend. However Tamon just could not imagine Yazon as a legend no matter how hard he tried.

Now finished with his breakfast Tamon stood and used some of the well water to wash out the remaining food out of the wooden bowl then tossed the bowl upside down over some dry rags. Then he walked to the front door and grabbed the old sword that Yazon had given him as a gift all those years back. How long ago was that, 5-6 years? Tamon thought as he stared at the old blade that was worth near as much as Tamon’s family could make in a year. He pulled the weapon out of the sheath holding it in his hand. Tilting the sword he watched the light slide down the blade’s smooth length.

“Leaving already?” Tamon’s mother Mina said from behind.

Tamon sheathed the blade and attached it to his belt. “Yes, Yazon will want to see me as soon as possible. You know how he is.”

Mina just smiled at her son. “Then by all means go, but do you think you will be back for dinner?”

“I doubt it. In all likelihood he will take me out into the woods again.”

His mother just nodded and walked off to resume her care of the house. As she did so Tamon opened the door and stepped out into the bright sunny day. He blinked his eyes several times as his feet carried him out onto the side road that would lead into the small village of Terrillia.

Small was perhaps not quite the right description of Terrillia. It by no means was a small 20-30 hut village, but a sprawling village housing well over a thousand people. Surrounding the village was an old stonewall standing about eight feet tall. That is if you could call the wall’s condition standing. The bricks had long since crumbled giving plenty of hand holds for the many a child that passed the time climbing and running along its length. Once perhaps the wall could have held soldiers at its top, but not since the Geharan war had any maintenance even been attempted on the old pile of rubble. At this point even maintenance was no longer possible.

Tamon’s feet carried him into the village as he pondered his latest dream. It is always the same person. Though not the same people could this mean something? Tamon frowned lost in thought as he turned toward the barracks near the center of the town off the main street. Tamon let out a low chuckle. Here I am pondering a dream and trying to find meaning in it. Who would of thought? Am I becoming Tamon the mystic?

Pushing away all such useless thoughts about dreams Tamon strode into the practice field of the barracks. Several Ferhardon soldiers stationed in Terrillia stood lounging and watching their comrades fight mock battles under Yazon’s direction. One looked up at Tamon turning his head from his battling companions. “Well if ain’t Tamon Var. Here to show us a thing or two with your fancy moves or are your here just to get Yazon off our backs?”

Tamon grinned back at the man and answered, “Why both. What else would I come here for?”

The soldier chuckled and yelled out to Yazon who was busy showing some of his soldiers how to fight. “Hey Commander your pet is here wanting your loving attention!”

Yazon turned from the warriors and began to walk toward Tamon with his long strides. When he came over to Tamon he stopped and looked down at the other soldier. “Loving attention? If you think this is loving attention perhaps I should dose you with some of it?” Yazon gestured over to the soldiers that now had resumed their combat. “Why don’t you go join them, soldier. I’m sure with your extensive skill you can show them what real combat is like. It is long past time that they see what happens when one man takes on four others. What do you think Tamon?”

“Wonderful idea Yazon. Not only will they see what happens, but they will get further practice in working together against a single enemy.”

The soldier just shrunk into himself as Yazon gleefully issued his new orders the group of battling soldiers. Then Yazon turned back to Tamon as the soldier shambled away to face the inevitable. “Tamon go watch I don’t want you to forget what happens when you take on too many soldiers for you to handle. After that I will want to see how your forms have held up while I was away at Pendar.” Yazon grinned an evil grin, “Then I will see if you’ve finally learned how to survive in the wilderness thought I doubt anyone with such pathetic talent as yourself will succeed where you’ve failed so many times.”

Yazon watched as Tamon shrugged of his comment and then Yazon said, “Hurry up. I have things to take care of.”

With that Yazon left into the interior of the barracks. Tamon turned and walked over the group of soldiers arraying themselves for their new and easier orders. Well at least easier for four of them. Tamon seriously doubted that the fifth nervous soul was going to find anything easy about them. Tamon leaned against the barracks wall to watch the fight about to take place.

The lone soldier stood against the four glancing side to side in an almost paranoid gesture. His sword was on guard ready to parry any incoming attack. That was a mistake. A man should when outnumber try to the first move to reduce his enemies before they organized. If Yazon were watching he would have made the lone soldier repeat the battle until he understood the principle. Not that the first move was likely to make much of a difference against four trained soldiers. A single man unless you happened to be the spirit master Cryfer Nerandland or one of the legendary Fifty did not stand a chance.

Suddenly the battle commenced. The soldier left side of the lone soldier rushed forward with a gigantic lunge. His attack was parried, but that did little good for another stroke now came for his now unprotected right side. The man leapt back barely in time. A smart move because now the two men who had been circling around the sides in an attempt to flank the soldier where now further from their goal. However the four men made an equally smart counter move the two attackers advanced as one pressing their attack as the other two moved quickly to capture the distracted soldier’s flank. Terrified by the rush of the wooden blades the man made no attempt to break their offense with an attack of his own.

Then it happened one wooden blade slammed past the lone soldier's defense a loud grunt could be heard as the air escaped the lone soldier’s lungs. Now stopped the two opponents finally got on the man’s flanks allowing them to attack with out interfering with their partners. Two more loud thumps could be heard as the blades slammed into the back of the leather cuirasses. The lone soldier twisted to face the attacker at his back by instinct leaving him open on his front. One blade descended on the man’s now open sword arm hitting hard causing the man to drop his wooden blade the final weapon stopped just short of the man’s throat.

Gasping for breath the soldier raised his arms in surrender as he slowly stood back up. One of the four stepped forward lifting the man and congratulating him in a good defense against obviously overwhelming odds. Tamon kept his comments to himself it was Yazon’s job to point out their failures not his. Yazon they would respect for doing his job, but if Tamon did it he would be hated.

Now with Yazon’s proscribed duty behind him Tamon moved into an open area in the practice yard. Once there he pulled his sword free from his scabbard once again letting the light run down the blade. This time he was checking for rust marks not admiring the cold hard steel.

Once done Tamon stepped into the most basic of the forms that Yazon had taught him so long ago shortly after Yazon arrived in the city. Must have been 8 to 9 years ago. I swear that man hasn’t aged a year since then. From the first form he moved in a series of complex attacks and defenses. In a few minutes Tamon found his focus no longer did he see the barracks and its yards, but the imaginary foes that he battled. In his intense concentration he did not notice the soldiers that gathered around watching his complex fighting style nor did he notice their crude jokes or their respect for his skill. Tamon lost himself in the complex style simply moving in reaction playing both the part of the attacker and defender in essence he was fighting himself.

Tamon’s concentration was interrupted by a loud voice, “Enough!” Tamon looked up lowering his blade and catching his breath. It took him an instant, but he recognized Yazon’s towering body. “I can see you’ve improved during the month I’ve been gone been practicing?”

Tamon looked at Yazon startled by the question. “No, not at all.”

“Humph, well it matters little.” Yazon looked off lost in thought for a few moments the focused back on Tamon. “Well boy, you ready for a little adventure in the woods?”

Tamon’s stomach growled. He grinned at Yazon, “Depends do I get to eat first? If not I will have to surrender right off to avoid imminent starvation.”

Yazon let out a loud laugh. “By all means boy eat then run off in the woods. I’d like to see if you could get to that old cave of yours before I catch you.”

Tamon just laughed and headed into the barracks to grab some food. Then he turned and set down the city road off into the depths of the Kyrha forest. There was no sense hurrying until he got deeper into the forest or due to exhaustion Yazon would easily catch him. The trick of course was to get to the cave before Yazon caught him, but it wasn’t that simple. If he headed strait Yazon would be able to follow him easily and ambush him for an easy win. Though Yazon could move ahead and get to the cave first and guard it that tactic gave Tamon too much of a chance. Trying to push the head start for an easy win was doomed to failure. The cave was a good day travel into the forest and to beat Yazon there Tamon would have to force march all night and the for the remaining day non stop. How Yazon moved that fast was a good question unfortunately it was not something that Tamon could answer.

Once into the forest Tamon took measures to hide his tracks. Though he doubted his attempts would throw off Yazon these forest incursions where not just for play they where practice. Though Yazon had never failed to catch him should Tamon someday need to avoid enemy troops he would be able to succeed. Besides Yazon would punish Tamon if he failed to do so unless of course Tamon succeeded which was not likely to occur. After breaking deeper into the forest Tamon took a side path to the caves. Though slower it would prevent an instant capture at Yazon’s hands.

Hours passed by and the sun began to set. Weary and hungry Tamon sat down to eat from the small pack he had prepared. His left leg was hurting from the endless bouncing of his sword at his side. It had been too long since he had taken the weapon on a long trek and his body was no longer accustom to its presence. While eating he glanced up. His vision seemed to split. Tamon shook his head closing his eyes then looked up again. This time to a completely new image....

*******

....”Here,” said the man looking stopping.

Tyan stopped looking at his lord. He frowned, “Are you sure there may not be enough metal for the project.”

The man smiled and looked at Tyan. “I’m sure and there will be more the enough resources. Though we may have to pull some things in from further away I own a large empire and can afford such things.”

“But if we transport materials the location may be found!”

The man shrugged, “It must be here. As for the materials we will have some of the Fifty transport them when they get to the forests edge. Once the surveillance is up we will catch anyone who comes close and eliminate him or her. Don’t worry about it being found.”

“Still there are surely better places.”

“No Tyan, it must be here and only here.” The man’s voice conveyed complete assurance.

Tyan’s face betrayed his doubt, but he would not argue with his lord.

The man chuckled, “Don’t worry about it Tyan and as for why it must be here lets just say that it is fate.”

The man smiled at Tyan then turned his attention looking strait at Tamon. He quirked an eyebrow and said, “I thought I told you before now is not the time. Besides your attention should be elsewhere shouldn’t it, Tamon?”

Tamon’s vision split again as reality seemed to collide with the vision. Once again he stared into the forest hearing the man’s soft laughter in his mind.

Spirit is most easily used to strengthen combat abilities and is highly efficient at turning a normal human into a killing machine. More skilled masters can go beyond this. Sometimes they are called Sorcerers though Peasents rarely make the distinction. True masters of the use have been known to acheive amazing feats that can best be described in english as magic. They are more than this though as they rely heavily on science instead of out right defying it.

In the fortress skill is seperated by mastery. Those that are new are refered to as novices and are rarely capable of truely intricate powers. Those that have trained it in the use of combat are called Spirit Warriors. Spirit Masters refers to those that have learned the more intricate usage of spirit.

The Tymarryn’s are perhaps the pickiest in defining spirit creating their own words to speak of the thing that influences so much of their society. They refer to spirit as Jitae which is a specific reference to the energies itself.

**Tymarryn Language**
NOTE:the Tymarryn Language is very close to Ancient, there are variances mainly in Tymmaryn concepts. In such do not be surprised if those speaking Ancient use Tymarryn words.

An interesting story :)

I should sit down and write something someday... but I know that won't happen.

Anyways, the only thing to watch out for might be a bit of redundancy with words, and look into the sentence structures a bit more. A few sentences seem rather awkward.

But other than that it looks like a great beginning :) Keep up the good work.
