Some thougs on videogames heros:
there are two kind of heroes: the first kind is the iper blasoned hero, the one on that everyone count on,that had already done great victories against the dark side and usualy is in a power position(usually in videogames the classical young hero go meet him to obtain some lesson and some power);
the second kind (the most used in vg) is the hero that is know from nobody, and also after destrupting the evil remain obscured in the fogs of time. A good example of this is Link from The Legend of Zelda: he always destroy evil, but after doing is duty nobody thanks him for what he had done, and he return in the darkness(if you have played the last two episodes you can well undrstead what I'm saying).

Heroes have strange meeting with people: people always speack with them as they are normal and common people, while in the meantimes are serching to save the world; sometimes people get angry with them, and other times they obstacle them.

Heroes most of time are lone, and they must keep the weight of the world on their shoulder alone.

Well, for now nothing more come to my mind.
Those thoughs come to me prevalently after finishing the last incarnation of Zelda for N64.
Any thougs on this topic?

In the land of Hyrule , there echoes a legend. A legend held dearly by the royal family tells of a boy...
A boy who , after battling evil and saving Hyrule , crept away from that land that had made him a legend...
Done with the battles he once waged across time , he embarked on a journey.A secret and personal journey...
A journey in search of a beloved and invaluable friend...
A friend with whom he parted ways when he finally fulfilled his heroic destiny and took his place among legends...

I'd say Suikoden II breaks the mold you speak of. I'd say more about it, but it would be difficult to do so without spoilers. Suffice it to say that the hero does become better known as you go through the game, and the hero of the previous game is rather well known. People don't forget the things that happened.

In addition, the heroes of RPGs are usually no-namers because they are Role Playing games - unless you're famous (which >99.99999% of people are not), you too are a no-namer. In order to identify with the hero, it would be necessary to have the hero come from humble roots.

And indeed, I'd suggest that most console RPGs are not really RPGs at all - controlling a character and role-playing the character are different things entirely.

If you ask me, console RPGs are more adventure than RPGs, it deviates too far from the original RPGs defined in PnP games, then computerized by Ultima and Might and Magic (which precedes any Japanese console RPG series today). The mainstream console RPG is a nice invention of the Japanese, has its root in adventure games, with little freedom in actually controlling what the characters do during the course of the game.

About Heroes' destiny, I think the heroes are made nobody at start to make you can familiarize with teh hero easier. Of course I don't think the FF game heroes suffers from this destiny anyway... there are stereotypes in most games, though.

That means, Mucks and Muds are closer to RPGs than RPGs. What a contradiction.
But it's true.
But, there is another series of RPGs where the heroes are not forgotten.
Lufia.

spoiler:

Lufia begins with you assaulting the Sinistrals fortress, with the heroes of what would be Lufia 2. As you advance in the game, everyone remembers them. You even watch one of them dying due to aging. And the hero (no name, but he is widely known as Jeros) was a bit famous, because, after all, he was the son of Maxim, the legendary hero

Or Valkyrie Profile. I wouldn't say Lenneth was a commoner

Main heroes or heroes in general?Because there are a lot of heroes other than the types you mentioned.
Good points nonetheless, although Termina(Majora's Mask)is a completely different place than Hyrule(Ocarina of Time)so Link being unknown is very believeable. That, and the Link from any Zelda game is not the same link in another game.I.E.:1st Zelda's Link is completely different from 2nd Zelda's Link, and so on,but they are all relatives.Family line sort of thing.
