I recall hearing a while ago that Sakaguchi said FFIX was his favourite Final Fantasy. He said it was closest to what he wanted the Final Fantasy series to be like...

...and yet, FFX looks like FFVIII...

What the hell? Am I missing something? If he liked FFIX so much, why go with the more futuristic FFVIII setting, instead of the more "medieval", anime-inspired, FFIX style, for FFX?

-Surtur can't stop saying "FF"... FF... FF... FF... FF... alright, that's enough...

I think you got a misquote. Sakaguchi's favorite FFs were FF5 and FF8.

edit: sorry, you're right, I read the psx.ign.com interview, and he states that the "upcoming" FF9 was closest to his idea of what FF should be.

quote:
Q: What is your favorite Final Fantasy title? And please tell us why you chose that particular game.

A: The upcoming Final Fantasy IX. This title (currently under development) is based on a reflection of all the previous works in the series. The coming installment is my "favorite," it's closest to my ideal view of what Final Fantasy should be. But, I've set my standards too high, so I think there's room for more Final Fantasy titles to come.

That also answers your question about FFX. Btw, there's nothing saying that FFX is like FFXIII at all. The character designer is the same, that's all (Tetsuya Nomura). He also did the character designs for FF7, FF8, and Parasite Eve. He's done the work in FF10 now. No big deal. Has nothing to do with how the game will play. Remember, the battle director is Toshiro Tsuchida, who previously did the battles in the Front Mission series. Sakaguchi also did NOT direct FFX.

Here's a partial list of credits.

Producer : Tomoyuki Takechi
Executive Producer : Hironobu Sakaguchi
Main Director : Yoshinori Kitase
Art Director: Yusuke Naora
Scenario: Kazushige Nojima
Battle Director: Toshiro Tsuchida
Character Designer : Tetsuya Nomura
Art Designer : Yoshitaka Amano
Music Composer : Nobuo Uematsu
Sound Editor : Minoru Akao

Changes: Uematsu is not the only composer; he is joined by Junya Nakano (Another Mind, Threads of Fate) and Masashi Hamauzu (Front Mission, SaGa Frontier II).

Compare that with FFVIII:
Producer : Shinji Hashimoto
Executive Producer : Hironobu Sakaguchi, Tomoyuki Takechi
Main Director : Yoshinori Kitase
Art Director: Yusuke Naora
Scenario: Kazushige Nojima
Battle Director: Hiroyuki Itou
Character Designer : Tetsuya Nomura
Art Designer : Yusuke Naora
Music Composer : Nobuo Uematsu
Sound Editor : Minoru Akao

and FFIX:

Compare that with FFXIII:
Producer : Shinji Hashimoto, Hironobu Sakaguchi
Executive Producer : Hisashi Suzuki, Tomoyuki Takechi
Main Director : Hiroyuki Itou
Art Director: Hideo Minaba
Graphics/Artwork: Yoshitaka Amano (- note not Character Design)
Scenario: Hironobu Sakaguchi
Battle Director: Yasushi Kurosawa
Character Designer : Toshiyuki Itahana, Shukou Murase, Shin Nagasawa
Music Composer : Nobuo Uematsu
Sound Editor : Minoru Akao

FFVII:

Producer : Hironobu Sakaguchi
Main Director : Yoshinori Kitase
Art Director : Yusuke Naora
Story by : Yoshinori Kitase, Kazushige Nojima
Based on the story by : Tetsuya Nomura, Hironobu Sakaguchi
Battle Director: Matsumura Yasushi
Character Director: Tetsuya Nomura
Music Composer : Nobuo Uematsu
Sound Editor : Minoru Akao

as you can see, the games have relatively different staff. Sakaguchi probably liked FF9 the best because he had the most control over it of recent FF games :)

FF9 human-animal breeds was the worse idea to grace Square since they decided to put every one of the heroes from ff8 in the same orphelinage.... =((

And square actually has two concept/design teams working.. hence, basicly, from design point of view, FF10 is done by an entirelly different crew than ff9 :p

I dunno... the human-animal "breeds" weren't that bad, as long as you took FFIX the way it was meant to be taken...

it was the... um... "Phantom Menace" of the FF's. It's one of the worst Final Fantasy's if you're looking for a profound story, but if you play it just for the fun factor, and ignore the fact the story was basically recycled from every other FF ever (which was, actually, Square's intention...), it's great.
Like SW:TPM, it's fun to play (well, you'd be WATCHING SW:TPM... then again, you're technically just watching FFIX, too...) for the effects, the action, the fast pacing of it, and the airship/pod chase/race...

Basically, the weird character design matched the easy-going, not-meant-to-be-taken-seriously attitude of FFIX.

Oh, and you're wrong.... there's no plot device, character design, or just about ANYTHING that could be worse than the orphenage plot twist.

hmm Well Kost did say the half breeds were the worst idea since the orphanage thing... not including it. That means the orphanage thing is still worse. Personally I've written the whole of FF8 off as a bad idea.

Personally I dont think FF9 was Phantom menace bad. That's harsh even by my standards. FF9's plot was fine, sure it was no Xenogears but it still worked perfectly well. There was plenty of originality and plot twists and Kuja was far more developed than Darth says under ten words Maul. No matter how hard I try I can never find that FF9 pod racing section or the spin off game.

No, no, no, I'm not saying FFIX is as BAD as SW:TPM, I'm just saying that both are technically fun, if you don't get bogged down by the story. Granted, FFIX has a better story, probably than Phantom Menace, but I enjoyed SW:TPM for all the action, effects, etc., which is how I felt about FFIX. It had a relatively good story, but the real fun of it is in the... well, action, effects, etc.

-Surtur likes action, effects, etc.

Aye, FFIX was fun to play if you take it as just another videogame like any Crash Bandicoot titles, Gran Turismo titles, Tekken titles, et cetera, meaning that while it won't rock the world like Xenogears, it will be able to entertain by just being plain fun.

Not that that is a bad thing or anything, but it absolutely isn't what I have come to expect from the Final Fantasy series, which in the eyes of many, is the pinnacle of RPG. Is FFIX a bad game? Hellz no. Is FFIX a bad Final Fantasy? Sure enough.

Strange, I liked it better than 7 or 8 or 5.

Then again, I do not consider FFs to be the pinnacle of RPGs, or even near that.

I tend to put FF9 on equal footing with FF7 myself. Its hard to say which game I like best out of the two. I guess in the end I probably like FF9 slightly more. I haven't played FFV though so I cant compare it with that.

Although in the end Xenogears beats all the FF games I've played.
