"Kain or Cain?" , Tue 14 Aug 02:32 PM

Although I'm pretty sure about this, I wanted to confirm that Kain is spelled Kain, and not Cain. This came about when I got an emulated version of FFIV and it's description mentioned that it had transulated the complete and original Japanese script. In the game, Kain was spelled Cain. But in FF Chronicles, Kain's name is spelled Kain. It too claims to have the original and trasulated Japanese script. Can anyone confirm that Kain IS infact spelled Kain?

like it matters, but it was spelt Kain in jp (yeah, that's katakana symbols KA I N). but it was Cain in the bible if that's where they got the name from in the first place, though I'm sure that's pronounced "kane" whereas the jp one would be "kine" so maybe not. and I worded that badly I bet.
anyways now that's (sort of) cleared up we know a lot more about the universe than we did before!

Wait, let me get this straight... I'm supposed to be pronouncing Kain, "Kine"? So I've been wrong, all these years........

Ahem, and since I'm too lazy to post another reply here, this is to One Winged: No, it's the same translation. CT had a good translation to begin with, so it would probably have been stupid of them to change it...

nope, I think 'Kane' is the right way to pronounce it and square just messed up. if they did get the name from the bible that is. it's like in FF1 and FF9jp, Chaos was spelt 'Ka O Su' in katakana, which would be pronounced like, ka-oss, not kay-oss. they got it right in xenosaga though. ke i o su! again I coulda messed up here.

Well, I've heard it pronounced "Kine" in various anime too. I wouldn't give Square credit for inventing these names.

yup, Kain comes from a direct translation of the japanese symbols. The "chronicles" translation keeps a lot of the "oopsies" from the original translation, including the infamous "you spoony bard"

nostalgia, really. It's assumed that the name "kain" comes from "Cain" from the bible.

If this is the case, which I also think it is, chances are it is a bastardization at the hands of Ted Woolsey. If he thinks a kiss between Rosa and Cecil needs to be cut out, I'm betting a reference to the original gangsta' would be too.

Woolsey may have done the translation, but it was one of his first, and he was not in charge of censoring. Nintendo had strict guidelines as to what can and cannot be put in their games.

He's the guy that actually was able to sneak stuff like teen pregnancy into FF6...

also, the main limitation was the cartridge size. Japanese text takes up a lot less room than English text. Since as the cartridge size gets bigger, the price of the game goes up, there was a limit to how much text you could fit.

weren't nintendo america so nuts with censoring that they had to change 'holy' to 'white' and they had to remove direct references to death or something?

Yeah, I remember reading over something about "Holy" being changed to "White" while reading on the Kain/Cain thing. Thanks for clearing it up. Atleast I can look forward to a more true version of the game when I get around to playing it. I'm still finishing up CT. I'm not able to compare to two, since I haven't played the original CT in forever, but was any text changed in FFC's version of CT?
