Okay, you know when FFIX was referred to return to Final Fantasy's roots, in terms of the characters being sprites? When I was wayy young and playing FF4, one of my first RPGs. I never saw the characters as sprites. I mean, I know they were sprites on-screen, but with the help of their pictures on the status-menu, I never saw them that way. I never pictured Edge as short and stubby with a big head. I always imagined them being full size. I just figured that they made them small due to graphical limitations.

Did everyone see them full-size or have I been looking at it the wrong way all these years?

FF9 did not use sprites.

Xenogears uses sprites.

Sprites are 2D drawings used to represent objects in a game.

What I believe you meant was that they moved to "super-deformed" style of characters (were it anime, they'd describe it as "chibi" - which literally means dwarf/dwarfen).

FF9 does use SD characters rather than "anatomically correct" designs such as from FF8. I'd say FF7, but frankly, Cloud's hair and Tifa's breasts to waist ratio were pretty screwed up anatomically).

It's another reason why I liked the old-skool stuff better than a lot of the new-skool stuff... Final Fantasy to me was about imagination, of true role-playing... I'd *want* to be part of those worlds that the characters inhabited, be part of the adventure. I can't say the same about any of the PSX Final Fantasies.

What the...? Tifa had a waist?

-Surtur probably couldn't see it under all that "excess baggage"...

Yeah, that's what I was trying to say .. I just misunderstood some things.

I agree with you totally. I loved imagining the game as a whole when playing the early FFs.Me and my cousin used to test each other on information of the game. FF4 is my all-time favorite. That's probably only because it was one of my first RPGs and I was young, but still. I wish I had an REAL computer, so I could get znes again and get a rom of FF2 and 3. I guess the PSX FFs left little to the imagination.

Haha, and nice try Surtur.

I never really gave it any consideration one way or the other... I accepted them as characters, and didn't pay any attention to their sizes... that didn't really affect the game at all for me. FFIX was different... the characters looked far more "cartoony", so it did have a slight effect on my perception of them... but it fit with the atmosphere of the game as a whole, so it definitely wasn't a bad thing... however, it didn't seem like it was "hearkening" (sp? Is that even a word? Is that the right word? I don't even know, anymore...) back to the old days by using fully 3D character sprites, that's for sure...

Erm... did I even answer your question? I may have gotten confused...

If not, you can just make up an answer for me, and stick my name to it...

-Surtur's joking...
