I sit here now, and I wonder. Did we lose something in the Xenogears translation, as we did with Final Fantasy Tactics? That could very well be a main reason for all this confusion over the ending, the plot, and why Fei's chemicals are tuned only to Elly's chemicals.
Now, having not yet had a chance to indulge myself in the maze that outdoes all other previous japanese gaming experiences, I ask to those who have, or those who are knowledgible (read: Myaru). What can you tell us about what was missed, and what it originally was? I'm sure I could find the answers myself if I glanced through my Perfect Works, but it's oh so much more entertaining here. :)
On another note, if Fei likes Elly, who is Miang, and Miang was Fei's mom... *insert TC humor here*

The translation at the beginning of the game wasn't too good. And those arn't the exact words but they pretty much are the same thing.

My Japanese gaming experiences are basically enjoying the gameplay and figuring out the main parts of the story, and taking educated guesses at the rest (occasionally checking up on it to be sure). All my knowledge of the language is 100% self-taught, so it isn't that extensive, but is actually pretty good. Even Gau was amazed when I told him how I learned :)
I really think that the Xenogears story would have made an awesome book series. Think about it. Each book is an entirely different story, but the same characters appear throughout, sorta. We'd also get in-depth looks (moreso) at each character's thoughts and feelings, and experience certain things missed in the game form.
I get an irrisistible urge to call Episode 5: Complete Circle. :)

The only thing I've found lacking in the Xenogears script is the grammar. However, Intangir knows more Japanese than I do, so... *shrug* Let's just say that, whenever I've bothered to compare the Japanese and English games (excluding the PW info - that's an entirely different playing field), I haven't gotten the impression that they're much different.
In fact, I almost think the experience might be more intense in the Western mind... if only because we have a heavier background in the myths and religions they used in the storyline. But that's just opinion.
But I think the confusion over the ending (and other parts of the storyline) is due to the fact that they didn't include all of their information in the game itself -- a lot of it had to be pushed onto the Perfect Works because they couldn't fit it in the game, or they weren't given enough time to do so. I've also been told that the other episodes were meant to be publicized in other mediums, which could also explain the information deficiency... if that's accurate.
Oh well - even the Perfect Works does not tell all, and I'm perfectly happy with that. What fun would it be if there wasn't any room for imagination? It gets boring if the writer leads you by the nose ALL THE TIME. ^.^

I think the production team did a superb job in the translation task. Although they could liven up the dialogues with some readable text instead of the constant "..." by Fei, etc. :) I doubt there were anything 'incomplete'.
However, there were small informations that only PW explained, e.g. the intro movie; Omega-1 was referring to the infant Deus, Alpha-1 was referring to -Persona- and -Kadomony- system. The "Coordinate codes NX... Main Planet" was referring to Old Jerusalem, etc etc. I can go on and on about such small details.

Considering I'm pretty sure there was a shot of infant Deus when Omega-1 is speaking, that's decipherable. I've also made, I believe, a number of other connections through the Game through simply ideas and attempting to analyze data when rewatching the beginning after playing the end.
Uh, and wasn't the <i>Eldridge</i> heading for a main planet somewhere else? Old Jerusalem is on Earth, and the <i>Eldridge</i> was not returning to Earth, so something tells me the PERFECT WORKS book 1.) Was referring to Earth and you mistranslated (I don't have the PERFECT WORKS book but if it contradicts the Game I can guess there's a mistranslation) 2.) The people who wrote the PERFECT WORKS book made a mistake or 3.) I didn't hear the 'main planet' reference right and thought it was referring to the approaching planet (extremely possible, considering my hearing when it comes to television).

Perfect Works explicitly said that the Eldridge was returning to Old Jerusalem, under the control of Deus that is. The explanation can be found on pg 8-9 (I think, it's on one of the Transcend Christ timeline page) on the lower portion of the page. If you look, there will be three column editorial printed on a dark blue background. The last of these editorial is entitled "Deus was aiming for the Main Planet..."
And in the explanation, it said Deus took over the entire Eldridge using < Zohar/Persona/Kadomony > and is making it's way to the Main Planet. At the same time, it inserted its own program, System HAWWA into the Original Elehayym.
Quoting my translation: "The 'Main Planet' was not referring to Neo Jerusalem, but in fact, Old Jerusalem. Deus was engaging in space metastasis mode and is attempting to metastasize Old Jerusalem. (Metastasis means the spreading of a disease from a central source). It was unknown why Old Jerusalem was targeted but in the current era, people regarded Old Jerusalem as a sacred star. It was in T.C. 16 when people left Mother Earth forever and aimed for the universe."
The intro movie is so full of surprises and it takes the explanation of Perfect Works to thoroughly understand it and enjoy it to its fullest potential.
Here's another one. When one of the Operator said "Confirming exxon replacement, genome restructured... etc", she was referring to the -Original Elehayym- (the one in Zohar's eye) being turned into System HAWWA, or Miang, under the influece of Deus.
And another: "Base code 80 million, 100 million! It's speed is overwhelming!" That was referring to Omega-1 (Deus) utilizing Alpha-1 (-Persona-) code cracking the main database of Razael Central.
EDIT: Ah, here we go. This is what I have translated. Page 9, 3rd column.

Deus occupies Razael in the opening Movie and attempts to take the metastasization of the Eldridge to "Main Planet" by starting the space metastasis mode.
This "Main Planet" is not the main planet Neo Jerusalem, but in fact, Lost Jerusalem. In other words, the original Earth was indicated by the Operator on the control screen. Details as in how Deus extracted the course to Earth was not clarified in the movie/game.
However, Lost Jerusalem was acknowledged as the "Sacred Planet" by the human race in this age. It is in the year T.C. 0016 when the human race started on a journey into space from Old Jerusalem --- at which time Old Jerusalem was deemed the "Forbidden Land" and for uncertain reasons, became unhabitable. Though sudden change in the planetary environment was thought to be the cause of the exodus, it was never made clear as to what the actual cause was.
"A certain Secrets" might be concealed in the Earth.

Not to sound mean, but you missed who Miang was?
She was like the most evil rpg villain ever.
More evil then Sephiroth, she wanted to destroy humanity and she already destroyed it once before.
Also I didnt see anything to bad in the translation, just that alot of the stuff in there is advanced. And takes a lot of thinking.

Darn it. We have had this debate before. Some feel that she evl inbcarmate, as you do Raine, but I think she was good. For dryin' in the mud, she is half of Mother God, so she can't be that vile. She showed a lot of compassion to Ramsus and Elly. So I don';t think she was that bad.
I could play the Christan card here to describe how some times God allows bad things to happen and paralell this to Miang, but I don't feel like getting flamed.

I blame it on Jen, the conversations started down that long road to insanity shortly after she appeared on the scene. Then again I`think we've just run out of good topics regarding Xenogears.
