Ok this has probably got to be the still on of the biggest mysterious in Xenogears... Why was Earth untouchable. I think I might have an answer. And it isnt plague or disaster. Ok lets see the people on the Eldridge called Earth their lost Jerusalem and it was untouchable to them. Well if you think about it they were traveling at close to speed of light speeds. Hum Einstein's therys. If they left Earth and traveled at the speed of light or close to it. Then Earth would age faster then them. So in a sense once they left they would never return to the same Earth because it wouldnt be the same earth itde be an earth in a different time then theirs. So in a sense it was untouchable to them. Life on Earth could of been going on normally. Ohh I really like this theory give me feedback guys. Oh and yes I apologize for not being active recently... I truely apologize.
Have a rainy day!

Even the Perfect Works doesn't really tell us why the Earth became the way it was - it mentions a vast changes and a natural disaster (I think - don't remember exactly) according to Intangir, but nothing more than that...
But, this is an interesting theory. ^_^ Follow through with it - you could be right.
Ja mata.

If we follow the laws of physics unlike the creators of star trek, then your theory is sound. I forget the exact way the warp engines of the Eldridge supposedly worked so I cant really deny your theory or confirm it. If the Eldridge travelled through space the usual way then I'm inclined to agree with you, however it did something like a space fold or created a stable wormhole then I would disagree. In the opening movie it looked more like something along the lines of a wormhole but then again I'd put more faith in the notes found in the Zeboim ruins.
Still lets just say you could build a starship which broke the light speed barrier, the odds are that the crew would be crushed like pancakes at the back of the ship. Think about the pressure we're talking about here, even if you could build an engine which could break light speed the ship wouldn't be able to handle the pressure and would get ripped apart before you got anywhere near acheiving the maximum velocity. In any case its only fiction and as I said earlier, it didnt stop the makers of Star Trek from avoiding the problem. Interesting theory, anyone else have a take on it?

I think that by intouchable they ment it as a metaphore or something like that. Like they couldnt touch their Earth becasue once they left it would never be the same time. Hum getting crushed at back of ship well if the ship is equally moving at the same speed in all parts that wouldnt happen. maybe when they stopped.

In PW, it states that the 'planetary environment' and the 'gravitational field' was changing for the worse. This initated the 'Pivot Machine House', who became the world's central agency responsible for the original Earth exodus that occured at 0016 T.C.
Anyways, the Pivot Machine House begin to build mass amounts of emigrant fleet that will eventually take humans to the stars, away from the degenerating Earth or the "Forbidden Land". After wanderng the space for 250 years, these exodized human found Neo Jerusalem in the M24 (Messier object #24) Star Cloud within the Sagitarrius Constellation.
It all returns to nothing. It all comes tumbling down tumbling down tumbling down.

Or when the ship started the engines the same thing could happen. Just think about poor old Guld in the Macross plus movie. Still even if they solved the problem somehow, the ship would have to be pretty powerful to withstand such speeds. In any case these are minor points like I said before.
