i've learned more about xenogears by reading posts here than i did playing the game through three times. well, maybe not. but still, wow.
anyway, i have an oddball question...what's the story with calamity? who piloted it in the sand cave, and how did it end up there? maybe someone stole it from ol' man bal when he left the keys in it...

I would point out here an interesting parallel between Calamity, Siebzehn and Achtzehn. They actually correspond to the paths of the Sephiroth if you consider Calamity to be 'Zechszehn'
Sephiratic paths have parallel meanings to the major arcana on a certain level.. so I'll give both the Tarot meaning and the Kabbalist meaning. As briefly as I can manage.
16 -> The Heirophrant, learning and teaching the Cosmic Law 17 -> The Lovers, subconscious unity.. we are twins.. 18 -> The Chariot, path of the heroic warrior.. submission to destiny

Well It's a prototype of seibzehn and achtzen
Just like maria tells seibzehn what to do i think old man Bal' used some com' equipment or something to tell Calamity what to do from the comfort of his old dump!!!
Well thats what I think

I'm almost positive Calamity had its own brain, like Seibzehn and Achtzen. Remember, when Bart and Fei leave, Bal says something like "You won't get past Calamity," or "Calamity will stop you," or something, never that HE was going to stop them; in other words, he knew it was hanging around in the caves, but he didn't pilot it himself.

Unless Calamity had its own mind, Balthazar being the pilot is the only logical answer. I mean, geez. He's one of the only people in the cave.

I was, and still am comfused about that......well, heres my theory.....
I think it was a prodotype for Seibzehn & Achtzehn, and because it was a prodotype, it must of had a brain intergreted into the system so Old'man Bal didn't have to pilot it himself, just does what Maria does, tells it what to do, and it does it
This is just a theory

My theory is similar. I think Calamity was created by Balthazar, and was the prototype for Dr. Nickolai's work on Seibzehn and Achtzehn. After leaving Shevat, Calamity might have been programmed to protect Balthazar, or simply to prevent dangerous types from escaping the caverns. Considering how dangerous Fei is (and he didn't even know it yet...), Calamity might have attacked automatically. Or Balthazar might have siced Calamity on Fei and Rico... to stop them? To test Weltall? It is difficult to say...

Remember when Balthazar started freaking out when he saw Fei's gear? He might of piloted calamity to stop fei for one reason or another. But he knew as much as the other wisemen did, so he really had no reason to....which confuses me...

yeah....i always figured either some guy stole it from balthasar ages ago, or calamity had a mind of its own, like its "siblings."
just a weird random plot hole, i guess.

I think it'd be reasonable to say it had a brain of itself. If someone had been piloting it, I think that Ol' Bal would of said "(Insert Calamity's drivers name here) will get you" or something along the lines of that.

yeah, I'd agree with you who say that it has an advanced AI system like that of Siebzehn and Achtzehn. I mean can you -imagine- Old Man Bal' climbinb into and piloting a gear??

But Siebzehn and Achtzehn still needs some human brain to pilot it right? I think Bal is piloting it, that's why he never appear in the game (it's always hard to appear in the game again when you are shredded into thousands of pieces...)

So, my original theory was right
Calamity must have had some kind of Artifical Intelligence or human Brain implainted into it.

Well, maybe old man Bal is wise enough to know the potential of the slayer of God so decided it's not wise to pilot Calamity himself ;)
