Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance is out!
« on: November 06, 2007, 09:17:06 pm »

It's on store shelves as we speak!  It's a bit unfortunate that it's out at the same time as all these other great releases, but what can you do?  Let me preface this by saying that I'm really proud to have worked on this game.  In my relatively short career, it's easily the best product I've worked on in a variety of ways.  The production went very smoothly (no crunching!) and the end result of the game is, in my opinion, absolutely fantastic.

For those who don't know, Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance is an stand-alone expansion-pack for the real-time strategy game Supreme Commander (meaning you don't need the original game to play it).  You do, however, need a PC with around the following specs:
  • 3.0 Ghz processor
  • 1GB RAM or better
  • 8GB hard drive space
  • 256MB Video RAM or greater with DX9 vertex shader/pixel shader 2.0 support
  • Internet: cable/DSL speeds

Those specs provide optimal experience for single-player and up to 4 player MP on medium map size.  Obviously, the better your machine, the better the experience will be (especially if you take advantage of the multimonitor support).

Anyway, if you're in an RTS mood, I think you'll like this game. Even though it's an expansion pack, it's a major overhaul of Supreme Commander in all aspects; the engine has changed radically, the graphics are much improved, the AI (which I worked on) is considerably better, the balance has dramatically improved, and the whole thing runs better than the original on the same hardware.

I'll post reviews and stuff as they start coming in.  If you have any questions, fire away Smiley I'll answer what I can.

Gamespot gives it an 8.5  With regards to nukes being nerfed... it all depends on how you're playing, and what faction you're playing.  As for the graphics... well, yes, even snazzier graphics takes more power, but it's all optional, so you could leverage that complaint against any PC game that stressed your machine.  Still, positive review Smiley

I find your lack of rhythm disturbing.

Nice.  An 8.5 from anywhere is nothing to sneeze at, but particularly from Gamespot, they're notoriously tough on games.

And anyway, why would you sneeze at it?  That's just silly, you'll get snot all over your monitor.

Well, they've also moved to a 5% incremental system.  So the next highest score would be a 90%, which is awfully tough to accomplish for an expansion pack.

Atomic Gamer's review gave it an 84%.  I've never heard of these guys, but check out this quote:

Then it's on to Skirmish mode, where you can choose from a number of AI opponents to give you a pretty tough challenge - even if you were able to beat multiple Supreme AIs in the original SupCom.

And this, again, is where most of the depth lies if you're not into playing online. LAN games are excellent with a buddy against the AI, or just doing a single game against an AI opponent is generally a fun and engaging experience. Depending on the map you choose (and there are quite a few here, new and old), you will be in for a short game or a long one with lots of back and forth along with plenty of expansion bases and fighting over resources.

Hell yes.  I'll take that as mad props, thank you.

I don't have a link yet, but PC Gamer gave Forged Alliance a 92 (page 70, Holiday 2007 issue) Cheesy

IGN gave it a 8.6... though I liked this part the best obviously Wink

Lots of solid maps and added skirmish AIs give you plenty of reasons to keep playing, if only to continue to explore how the changes GPG made with the expansion affect the balance of gameplay.
(Emphasis mine)

YAY AI!

Actually, that was one of the better more thoughtful reviews I've seen.  The comments they leverage against the game (namely that it's incredibly complex and takes a while to really learn) is absolutely true.  It took me a while just to ramp up and understand how it works.

That said, it is pretty rewarding once you do learn how everything works, and get a good feel for it.  There's a lot of depth and strategy, it just takes a while to get to the point where you can appreciate the subtlety of the game.  It's kinda like Go in that sense... not really newbie friendly.
